Found in a barn with another (healthy) kitten severely emaciated I70 & Tower on 10/16/2009. Very friendly, eats well. Will be a few weeks before he is available for adoption, he needs to put on weight and be neutered.

Updates:
Little Bubba (not available for adoption yet) was left to fend for himself at a barn. With no food, he resorted to eating dirt, twigs, and possibly a mouse. He was terrifyingly thin, wobbly, and his lower half and the box he arrived in were soaked with watery diarrhea.

After all of the attention he had at intake, Little Bubba had very little strength to protest a bath and quietly endured the few tests we needed to run to see where we should proceed with his healthcare. He tested negative for FIV, FeLV, Heartworm, Panleukopenia, and Giardia.

During the next week he ate like there was no tomorrow, but continued to seep diarrhea and had great difficulty passing the hard stool that had been stuck there for so long, so off to the vet. With a weekend stay on IV's and lots of help under anesthesia, he was relieved of 14 (or so) hard masses of feces.

A week after that he looks more like a cat and less like an orange striped skeleton movie prop. His face and body have filled out more, his eyes less sunken, and he almost has the strength to walk a few paces before going back to bed. He still has trouble passing hard stool, but no longer seeps. He loves to be loved and has learned if he meows he gets pets and foods! He needs the calories, anyway. : )

Tomorrow is the Mighty Adventure, so I'll be able to get a shot of something vaguely more interesting than a piece of celery then. Hopefully.

In preparation for the Adventure, and because I didn't take any pictures earlier today, I had some celery. It's actually negative calories!

Since this was a lens-reversing-ring supermacro shot, I needed to shoot at very small aperture. As such, you can see all of the crud on my sensor pretty clearly. I really need to get one of those little blower bulbs so I can clean that crap off...

Academic excellence, competitive greatness, and character development. These are the three things that are more important than winning in the eyes of new Porterville High football coach, Rick Stewart.

Being a Lindsay native with a wife from Strathmore, taking the job at PHS is a homecoming for Stewart.

"It's been very enjoyable to be back home with friends and family," he said.

Stewart has a long, experienced background as a football coach with a great track record of turning losing teams in the opposite direction. At McFarland High School, Stewart's coaching led the team to go six and four, winning the playoffs for only the 8th time in school history.

The greatest turnaround, however, was when he was coaching in Corcoran; he took the team from being 0-20 to undefeated league champions.

Although his success rate with creating winning teams is high, his coaching motto has nothing to do with winning. Stewart gets this motto from retired UCLA football coach, John Wooden.

"Scoreboards don't make winners and losers. We will never measure our success by wins and losses," Stewart said. "We all do want to win as much as the next guys, but wanting to win and measuring your success by wins and losses is two different things."

Stewart has told his team all summer that if they really want to measure their success and thank their coaches, they can do that five years down the road by getting a college degree.

For Stewart, academics always come first.

The team has study hall every Monday and Wednesday, in addition to weekly grade checks. For players with low grades, study hall is mandatory. When school starts, the team will have mandatory binder checks every week and coaches will be asking every teacher to allow football players to sit in the front of their classrooms.

"We will also have some classroom sittings during practice where we will teach the boys how to take notes and how to study for tests," Stewart said. "We will also have study hall on Friday mornings instead of lifting weights."

Immediately after he was hired in April, Stewart started weight training, lifting five days a week at 6:30 a.m. In addition to weekly scrimmages and tournaments over the summer, the team has also took part in team-building events.

"Football is very much a team game. Coach Stewart and his staff have provided numerous opportunities this summer for our students to learn about each other and to build bond of respect and friendships, and in turn, build unity and camaraderie among the team," said PHS principal, Steve Graybehl.

Three weeks ago they went camping at Morro Bay and before that they attended a football camp in Madera. The boys also had a weekend mini camp, where the team stayed overnight on campus and had eight practices.

"Rick has brought a tremendous amount of positive energy to the campus of Porterville High School," Graybehl said. "There are many life lessons learned by participating in sports besides winning and losing and I believe Rick is not only on a mission to teach the game of football to our students, but to provide these life lessons to them as well."

1 Thomas' Light Whole Grain English Muffin, split
1 slice (1 ounce) lean, low-sodium ham or lean Canadian bacon
2 egg whites
1 slice low- or reduced-fat Cheddar cheese Salt and pepper to taste

Coat an egg ring (see note) with olive oil cooking spray.
Toast the muffin halves until they're lightly browned. While the muffin toasts, warm the ham for about 1 minute in a small nonstick skillet. Remove the ham from the skillet and place it on half of the toasted English muffin. Cover to keep warm.
Place the prepared egg ring in the nonstick skillet over medium heat. Pour the egg whites into the ring. Cover the pan and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes, or until eggs are nearly set. Run a knife or spatula around the inside edge of the ring to break the egg loose. Remove the ring. Flip the egg over and cook it for about 30 seconds longer, or until done.
Place the egg on top of the ham. While the egg is piping hot, lay the cheese over it. Top with the remaining muffin half. Serve hot.

Note: If you don't have an egg ring, you can use the ring from a wide-mouthed canning jar, sprayed with olive oil cooking spray.

Makes 1 serving.

The low hit me at work this morning when I tested to see what my breakfast bolus had done. I didn't feel particularly low and the reading surprised me, coming out of nowhere as it did. I had a boatload of insulin from breakfast still driving me down further even as I realized I had no glucose tablets with me and wobbled over to the cafeteria to buy some regular Coke. The cashier seemed to be taking forever sorting cash in her register and throwing out receipts, and it was all I could do not to yell at her. But eventually I had my Coke bought and drained half of it in five seconds and could relax a bit. Then I went back and bought an enormous chocolate muffin and ate it to soak up all those extra units from breakfast I wouldn't be needing. And then I felt angry and annoyed for having to eat 500 calories just because of diabetes.

I don't like lows this low, and I like them even less when I barely feel them. They're scary. Especially when you have enough insulin in your system to make your blood sugar negative 2.5 if you don't do something in the next few minutes.

If there's one thing that's predictable about this disease, it's how unpredictable it can be. It can blindside you with an extremely low or high blood sugar out of nowhere, and you've got to be prepared.
