Fast food is OK by me. Most Chinese food is pretty fast. Rare steak (and Alex enjoyed it in France where they just about show it the heat) is fast. Even some local food is fast. Try doing your cabbage in less time than you think it needs. You'll thank me afterwards.

What I DON'T like about most commercial fast food ~ including that which is served at the Trafford Centre is the waste. Not the waste food but the packaging. Wouldn't the waste disposal problem that they moan and groan about go away if we had less packaging for damned near everything?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am into healthy eating and am always banging the drum where diet and exercise are concerned!

I was reading some pretty shocking statistics about how some children are not only not getting enough fresh fruit and vegetables each day - but some are even struggling to correctly identify certain fruits when they are presented with a picture of them. Shocking .....

Like most children, my girls are given the odd packet of crisps, sweets or chocolate here and there, but we always have plenty of fruit on hand as a first choice. Francesca is particularly fond of Bananas - or "Narnna's" as she refers to them!!

I've been trying to lose weight to see if it helps ease my back pain. No bread, rice, pasta, sweets, fruit or wine (agh!!), etc. Lots of meals like this one. BIG salad with some protein. In this case, feta cheese, tuna and black beans.
Tasty to be sure, but frack, do I miss my vino and most of the other stuff. Been pretty good at keeping at it. A couple glasses at a friends place and a stolen chocolate covered coffee bean every now and again. Down 10 lbs in 4 weeks to 153.5. Five more to go and we'll reevaluate.

Academic excellence, competitive greatness, and character development. These are the three things that are more important than winning in the eyes of new Porterville High football coach, Rick Stewart.

Being a Lindsay native with a wife from Strathmore, taking the job at PHS is a homecoming for Stewart.

"It's been very enjoyable to be back home with friends and family," he said.

Stewart has a long, experienced background as a football coach with a great track record of turning losing teams in the opposite direction. At McFarland High School, Stewart's coaching led the team to go six and four, winning the playoffs for only the 8th time in school history.

The greatest turnaround, however, was when he was coaching in Corcoran; he took the team from being 0-20 to undefeated league champions.

Although his success rate with creating winning teams is high, his coaching motto has nothing to do with winning. Stewart gets this motto from retired UCLA football coach, John Wooden.

"Scoreboards don't make winners and losers. We will never measure our success by wins and losses," Stewart said. "We all do want to win as much as the next guys, but wanting to win and measuring your success by wins and losses is two different things."

Stewart has told his team all summer that if they really want to measure their success and thank their coaches, they can do that five years down the road by getting a college degree.

For Stewart, academics always come first.

The team has study hall every Monday and Wednesday, in addition to weekly grade checks. For players with low grades, study hall is mandatory. When school starts, the team will have mandatory binder checks every week and coaches will be asking every teacher to allow football players to sit in the front of their classrooms.

"We will also have some classroom sittings during practice where we will teach the boys how to take notes and how to study for tests," Stewart said. "We will also have study hall on Friday mornings instead of lifting weights."

Immediately after he was hired in April, Stewart started weight training, lifting five days a week at 6:30 a.m. In addition to weekly scrimmages and tournaments over the summer, the team has also took part in team-building events.

"Football is very much a team game. Coach Stewart and his staff have provided numerous opportunities this summer for our students to learn about each other and to build bond of respect and friendships, and in turn, build unity and camaraderie among the team," said PHS principal, Steve Graybehl.

Three weeks ago they went camping at Morro Bay and before that they attended a football camp in Madera. The boys also had a weekend mini camp, where the team stayed overnight on campus and had eight practices.

"Rick has brought a tremendous amount of positive energy to the campus of Porterville High School," Graybehl said. "There are many life lessons learned by participating in sports besides winning and losing and I believe Rick is not only on a mission to teach the game of football to our students, but to provide these life lessons to them as well."
